        Two days changed Corissa Danvin's life when she ventured near the Forbidden Zone surrounding her isolated colony on Torben while searching for her deceased father's  secret gemstone mine so that she could  save the farm she'd inherited from repossession by the Alliance government. In those two fateful days, she made contact with one of Torben's elusive First Dwellers. Then she ran into Vance Far Sun, someone she'd avoided for two years---a school friend for whom she'd carried a hidden crush, but he'd suddenly turned delusional under the strange spell of the energy barrier surrounding the Human colony.  And now he's accusing her of not giving them a chance together....

        But political events on Torben upend the lives of the Human colonists, also throwing Corissa into an uncertain future wherein she might lose everything, including the chance to reconnect with Vance.
